Science
Science is taught from EYFS to Key Stage Two, typically in weekly lessons. In EYFS, it is planned and taught following the 'Understanding the World' curriculum strand in the EYFS framework. We use the Developing Experts scheme for Science and teachers adapt it to meet the needs of our pupils. The Developing Experts curriculum is based on the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum and is enhanced by industry experts, who link lesson topics to careers in STEM. We feel this widens our children's aspirations and supports their cultural capital by demonstrating how scientific learning relates to the real world and various jobs.
Our Science Lessons
Lessons are structured to give all pupils multiple opportunities to recap on previous learning. This structure is particularly effective in supporting our lower attaining pupils and bettering their chances to succeed, as substantive knowledge is reinforced by frequently recalling information through pictures, videos and vocabulary. The pupils know this as 'Retrieval Practice'.
Lessons features a ‘challenge task’ to support our higher attaining pupils which our teachers use to expand and further develop our pupils' enquiring minds.
Scientific knowledge is applied in lessons as pupils learn to pose their own scientific questions and conduct fair tests in a range of practical activities and investigations as developing scientists.
In KS2 investigations, pupils are expected to complete tables and graphs as a way to present their results making links with mathematics.
